Now that’s one hell of a coincidence

Diana Nyad

Today I learned that back in August, Diana Nyad tried to swim from Cuba to Key West. She’s 61 years old, a former Olympian and world record holder. She swam for 29 straight hours before succumbing to asthma, rough seas, and a shoulder injury. As an athlete (pfft… former athlete… wannabe… all right, I have one heck of a positive attitude), I admire the hell out of her guts and courage. She had enough perspective and self-awareness to recognize her amazing achievement.

As a lover of language and a fan of fate, her last name had me gobsmacked. Nyad sounds exactly like “naiad,” one of the three main classes of water nymphs in Greek mythology. Naiads belonged to fresh water; nereids belonged to the Mediterranean; Oceanids belonged to the larger oceans. I tried to do some quick internet research, but I couldn’t find anything on her background before swimming. If Nyad is her own name, then she was born a swimmer. If Nyad is her married name, then she was destined a swimmer. If she made up the name ‘Nyad’ and didn’t want it to look too much like ‘naiad,’ that’s just cheesy.

I know, it’s all one big coincidence. Her last name may have a completely different meaning.

But you can’t deny that it’s really, really cool.
