Solar Flare

Open your eyes

Dr. Foster peeled the glasses off her face. She gave Congressman Weatherly her most drippingly disdainful look, the one she reserved for graduate students who didn’t know a black hole from their… the rest of that statement was beneath her. “This data is impossible to ignore, Congressman. We’ll have fires raging across the entire west coast in thirty days if we do nothing.”

“What exactly do you recommend we do, Dr. Foster? The space shuttle program is dead. Unlike the movies, we don’t have a magic spaceship ready to fly into space and save us at a moment’s notice.”

“You can’t tell me there are no options.” She checked the door. The room was sealed; the blue light was on. “I know there are options. I’ve tracked the satellite launches, including the ones you call ‘tests.’ Six in the past six months, fourteen in the past twelve, all of them within altered flight path distance that would allow them to rendezvous with something located over the South Pole. How long has your military space station been there, Congressman?”

Weatherly’s face drained of emotion, but not color. He was weighing his options, quickly. Foster knew he would have squashed her like a bug if she didn’t have a nuclear-sized stinger waiting for him. “I can have every one of your grants rescinded and throw you in jail for violation of national security. It’ll be weeks before any hearing.”

He said it like he was asking a question. That was just a probe. “Please. If that’s the best you can do, it’s no wonder we’re in this mess. Let’s just say there’s a safety deposit box, not in my real name, that will be opened if I go missing for more than twelve hours.”

Weatherly smirked. “Touche, then. Yes, we have assets in orbit. We also have data that suggests the solar flare will burn some countries that are less than friendly to us. It’s too early to tell.”

“You mean you’re hedging your bets.”

“However you wish to say it.”

  2. Fantastic. You manage to tell such a fascinating story in such a short amount of time.

Thanks! This one put the “flash” in flash fiction. I was in a hurry and wanted to see what I could do quickly. The characters were loosely based on Jodie Foster and James Woods from the movie “Contact.”
