“If you could be part of any fictional universe, what would it be?”

The finalists for me are: Doctor Who (the Tom Baker era), Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Farscape. The winner is… Farscape!

FarscapeThere was a time when I would have leaped into the ST:TNG world, but by the end of the series, it was dreadfully PC and bland. Dr. Who spent a lot of its time on good old Earth, but the villains could be so awful and terrifying that I thought I’d rather pass. I chose Farscape because, while there are some truly horrifying things in the Farscape universe — the genocidal Scarrens, the mind-numbing Nebari, and the tyrannical Peacekeepers, just to name a few — it was also a universe filled with wonder, courage, passion, adventure, and love. If you could get yourself aboard a good ship and have enough friends to watch your back, the Uncharted Territories would be an incredible place to live.

If I were teleported there, right now — blue jeans and sneakers, a backpack with a Kryptonite bike lock and a notebook — I would probably try to become a courier rather than a hired gun. The near term would be all about survival. Since there’s no need for MS Excel to make a living, I need to take a more basic look at what I bring to the table. I’m resourceful, reliable, ethical and trustworthy. Hence the scifi courier angle. I wouldn’t look for a fight or go off on a crusade, but I would get the job done. On my own time, I would write or draw to keep myself sane, and I would probably hook in with Delvian teachings on mind and body. If there’s a Delvian form of martial arts I would probably learn it. I probably couldn’t get that far into it, though, since I’m not a plant…

If this were a video game, I would love to be the Farscape equivalent of Soap MacTavish or Garrett the Thief. I’m not the biggest or the toughest, but I like to outfox the bad guys.

The whole thing would probably work best for me as a good, long dream, or a year spent living another life. I’ve already moved far away from my family, friends and the things that I know, and I had to go back to them. I’m the attachable type.
