It’s worth thinking about

Praying HandsThe New York Times published an article today on events in three different countries where Catholic priests have sent letters to their bishops or the Pope recommending that women should be allowed to be priests. I was relieved to hear it. I don’t know how much traction the movement will get — probably none — but I have an appreciation for the kind of deep-seated doctrine they’re up against, and the kind of courage it must have taken to do what they did. The Church doesn’t take a very thoughtful eye to dissent, or encourage lively debate. Its deep commitment to Scriptural precedent, and over two thousand years of repetition, have made it an organization that resists change.

I’m in favor of women being ordained as priests; I always have been. The two most sincerely religious people I’ve ever known were both women, and I think they would have made excellent priests, if they had chosen that path.
